Rookipedia earns money from advertising and from affiliate links. This page explains exactly how that works, because you should be able to judge our recommendations knowing what is in it for us.
The short version
- Some links to products and services are affiliate links.
- If you click one and buy something, we may earn a commission.
- You never pay more. The commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your pocket.
- We disclose this at the top of any article containing affiliate links, not just here.
Amazon
Rookipedia is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and its international equivalents, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.
As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
Amazon prices and availability change constantly. Anything we quote was accurate when we checked it, and the date is shown on the article — always confirm the current price before buying.
Other programmes
We also take part in other affiliate programmes and networks covering software, tools, courses, and equipment relevant to the topics we write about. The same rules apply to all of them.
Advertising
We display advertising supplied by third-party networks. We do not choose the individual adverts you see and their presence is not an endorsement. If an advert on this site is misleading or offensive, please tell us — we can block categories and advertisers.
How we stop this corrupting the advice
Affiliate income creates an obvious incentive to tell you to buy more things. Three rules exist specifically to counteract that, and they are built into the format of every guide rather than left to good intentions:
- Every starter kit lists what not to buy. Each recommendation sits next to a free, borrowed, or secondhand alternative wherever one exists. If you can start with something you already own, we say so.
- Commission rate never affects placement. We recommend the thing a beginner should get. If the better option pays us nothing, it still goes first.
- No paid placements. Nobody can buy a recommendation, a ranking, or a mention on this site. If we ever publish sponsored content, it will be labelled at the top of the page and it will not be presented as a review.
What we get out of a purchase
Typically a few percent of the sale price. On a €30 beginner item that is often well under a euro. This is not the kind of money that would tempt anyone to recommend a bad product; it is the kind that, at volume, pays the hosting bill.
We receive aggregate commission reports from the retailer. We cannot see who you are or what else you bought.
If you would rather not
That is completely fine. Search for the product name directly instead of using our link. You will get the same product at the same price, and the guide is yours to use either way.
