Rookipedia exists for the moment before you start.
Not the moment where you are comparing the top ten of something. The moment before that — where you have decided you want to try a thing, and you have absolutely no idea what the first step is, what it is going to cost you, or whether you are about to waste a weekend and a few hundred euros finding out you did it wrong.
That gap is the whole reason this site is here. The internet is extremely good at telling you what the best mirrorless camera is. It is remarkably bad at telling you that you do not need one yet.
What we actually publish
Every guide on Rookipedia follows the same shape, because after enough false starts we worked out that beginners always need the same eight things in the same order:
- What this actually is — in sixty seconds, with no jargon.
- Whether it is for you — including an honest note on who should skip it.
- What it really costs — money and hours, with the date we checked the prices.
- Your first seven days — day by day, so there is no blank page.
- The starter kit — the few things worth having, and what to borrow or skip instead.
- The mistakes — the specific ones, not “be patient and practice”.
- How to tell it is working — what progress honestly looks like at week one.
- Where to go next — once you have outgrown the beginner guide.
Who writes this
Rookipedia is written and edited by a small independent team, publishing under the Rookipedia Editorial name. We are not a media group and we are not sponsored by anyone.
We should be straight with you about our qualifications, because it matters for how you read what follows: we are not experts in most of what we cover. We are people who learn things from zero and write down precisely what happened. That is the entire premise. When you read a Rookipedia guide, you are reading notes from someone roughly four weeks ahead of you, not from someone who has been doing it for twenty years and has forgotten what was confusing.
There are real advantages to that. Experts suffer from the curse of knowledge — they skip the step that actually trips everyone up, because it stopped being difficult for them a decade ago. We are close enough to the confusion to still remember it.
There are real limits to it too, and we would rather name them than pretend otherwise. We are not doctors, financial advisers, lawyers, electricians, or mechanics. Where a topic touches your health, your money, or your safety, we explain how something works and we stop there. We will not tell you what to take, what to buy into, or what is safe for your particular situation. For that, go to someone qualified and regulated. Our disclaimer spells this out properly.
Why we publish under a team name
We write under the Rookipedia Editorial byline rather than personal names, for ordinary privacy reasons. We think that is a fair trade as long as we are transparent about it, so here is the deal we are offering:
- We will never invent a person, a credential, or a photograph to make ourselves look more authoritative than we are.
- We will always tell you when we have tested something ourselves and when we have not.
- We will always disclose when a link earns us money, before you click it.
- Every message sent through our contact page reaches a real person who reads it.
Our editorial standards page explains how we choose topics, how we check things, and how we handle it when we get something wrong.
How Rookipedia pays for itself
Through advertising and affiliate links. When we recommend a product and you buy it through our link, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
We have built one rule into the article format specifically to keep that honest: every starter kit includes what to borrow, buy secondhand, or skip entirely. A guide that tells you to buy all eight things is a guide that has stopped working for you. Full details on our affiliate disclosure page.
